The first aerobatic display team of the Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Udara) was formed in 1950's from Skadron Udara (Air Squadron) SkU 3 and flew P-51D Mustang fighters.
In 1962, this team was replaced by a team from SkU 11, which flew MiG-17 jets.
In 1978, the team was replaced by another from SkU 14, equipped with CAC-27 Sabre (the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CAC-27 was an Australian variant of the North American F-86F Sabre). This aerobatic team was named "Spirit 78".
In 1985, yet another aerobatic team was established this time from SkU 15 with BAe Hawk Mk.53 trainers and this new team was named "Spirit 85".
The Elang Biru aerobatic display team was officially formed in 1995 and flew six F-16's from SkU 3 (the first squadron which had formed an aerobatic team in Indonesia), but the first steps for establishment of this team began the year before.
Elang Biru aerobatic team first public demonstration was on 5 October 1995 during celebrations at Halim Perdanakusuma in order to mark the 50th anniversary of the Armed Forces. In December of that year, the team's planes received special color scheme in blue and yellow. All team's aircraft were equiped with white smoke pods and red smoke generators.
The first foreign debut of Elang Biru was at the Singapore Airshow in 1996.
After a few short years of existence, the Elang Biru aerobatic team was disbanded in 2000.
