Fred's Five Sea Vixen FAW.1

Fred's Five was the Royal NAVY aerobatic display team formed in 1962 from No 766 Squadron in Yeovilton.

The leader of the team was Lieutenant Commander Peter Reynolds (nickname FRED), who led five Sea Vixen FAW.1 aircraft, painted in dark sea gray and white colors. For more spectacular demonstrations the Sea Vixens were equipped to produce colored smoke by injecting painted oil from a tank fitted bellow the back wing into the exhaust.

The Fred's Five display team first display was on 16 June 1962 at Upavon during 50th Anniversary of Military Aviation. Later in September the team performed in Farnborough Air Show and in 1963 Fred's Five were disbanded.

Unusual photo, as the Fred's Five was a five-ship team, but from the beginning they probably flew six Sea Vixen aircraft. Or the sixth plane was for photo shooting. Fred's Five Sea Vixen FAW.1.
