After the World War II, the "Gray Angels" aerobatic team was formed in 1948 flying with three FH-1 Phantom jets from the US Marine Corps.
The team was formed by three admirals: Admiral Daniel V. Gallery, and Rear Admirals Apollo Soucek and Edgar A. Cruise each from the US NAVY.
After several air displays at the end of that year, the "Gray Angels" were disbanded after their poorly timed arrival at a September air show in Cleveland, Ohio nearly caused a head-on, low-altitude collision with another large formation of aircraft.
The "Gray Angels" had the distinction of being the first US aerobatic display team flying jet aircraft.
